University of Nottingham Health Service 3,500 Kg Research Clinic

The latest addition to our 3,500 Kg clinics is this Mobile Research Unit for the University of Nottingham Health Service/ Cripps Health Centre which has been funded by the National Institute of Health Research. Named ROBERT (Research Outreach Bus Enabling Remote Trials) in honour of Robert Cripps whose foundation funded the recent rebuild of Cripps Health Centre.

The vehicle is based on a Ford Transit Skeletal chassis which has been strengthened, lengthened and modified by our engineers utilising an aluminium subframe and a steel extension piece. The body is 4.7 metres long and because these chassis have wide wheels at the back has a width of 2.3 metres. The vehicle features a wind-out manual awning on the side with storm bars back to the body. Also on the exterior are two aluminium steps, 4 polished stainless steel handrails and two external LED lights as well as a small electrical locker for the inlet. The interior has three rooms, the first towards the front is a waiting room, which can also double as a consultation room as there is a fold down laptop desk and a store cupboard. The seat houses all the batteries and the inverter system which powers the vehicle and is linked to two solar panels on the roof, to give a very green carbon footprint.  The double sliding doors lead into the main clinic area, which has two lower cupboards and an upper cupboard. The lower cupboards on one side contain the blown air ducted heater, which also heats up the hot water, and a circular sink and tap with water and waste below. On the other side is a centrifuge mounted to the counter and a medical refrigerator in the lower cupboard. The reclining couch has phlebotomy arms and can recline to heads down and feet up position, while there is an examination stool for the staff. At the rear is the toilet compartment with a cassette type toilet complete with fold down sink and tap. There are opening roof vents in both rooms and an extractor fan in the toilet.

Four folding chairs and a folding table complete the furniture set up.
